Milwaukee Math & Science Academy recently completed its very first Summer Reading Program, aimed at encouraging students to develop independent literacy habits and to support their love of reading. Students from K5 through 3rd grade participated in the program, along with six dedicated teachers! The three-week long program was filled with a variety of fun activities that were designed to expose students to different types of books. Focus was placed on genres such as fairy tales, science fiction, mystery, poetry, biographies, and more. Students engaged in many hands-on activities and crafts, including making their own book storage crates and writing their own books. The program also went on several literacy-themed field trips, including to Barnes & Noble, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the beach! The students were able to share their love for reading with others when they went to read books to small children at Malaika Early Learning Center.
Reading during the summer is absolutely essential to retaining important academic skills that were learned during the previous school year. MMSA is very proud of the effort and dedication to reading that was shown by the students who participated in the Summer Reading Program. We encourage all students – from any grade level – to pick up a book this summer and read!
