From the Principal

Welcome to Milwaukee Math and Science Academy,

Thank you for your interest in our school! We are excited to announce our school is opening this fall for Kindergarten through 5th grades. Milwaukee Math and Science Academy (MMSA) is a public charter school, and there is no cost to attend. It will be located in the former Harambee Community Schools facility as an independent charter school authorized by the City of Milwaukee. Charter School Review Committee is led by Dr. Howard Fuller.

My name is Mr. Alper Akyurek and I am the principal of MMSA. I am so excited to have the opportunity to introduce this great educational program for the students and parents in Milwaukee.

I was the founding director of Horizon Science Academy Elementary School located in Columbus, OH. ( HSA Elementary School has accomplished a lot within the third year of its operation, doubling its enrollment with a high interest from the community. HSA Elementary has been playing its role to close the achievement gap and provide a quality education that our students deserve.

MMSA is managed by Concept Schools, (, a not-for-profit organization that manages 27 schools in 7 states in the Mid-West. MMSA will be the first Concept School in Wisconsin. The core values of Concept Schools are Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Courage, Curiosity, and Effort. These values create the foundation of all Concepts Schools, including MMSA.

At MMSA, we will combine the best of my expertise and the experiences, technology, and knowledge that Concept Schools have amassed to create an environment that fosters student success. The school curriculum will emphasize science, math, technology, and English. We will also offer activities and opportunities for students in evenings and on weekends. Your student will be challenged to reach his/her maximum potential at MMSA !

Our goal is that to provide a safe, caring and structured learning environment for our students and motivate them to grow academically, socially, and emotionally, and become productive citizens for their communities. We ask that you join us in this goal by setting high expectations for your children, and helping them achieve their own goals. Parental involvement is crucial to the success of our school. Staff will conduct home visits with the goal of getting to know your family and students better on a personal level.

We will start with the grades K-5 in our first year. As the school grows, we will add grade levels to eventually work with all students grades K-12.

Please apply online at We will be hosting open houses, festivals and other events to provide for you with the opportunity to get to know more about the our program.

I look forward to meeting you and your student!

Mr. Akyurek
