In preparation for fire safety month in October, during the month of September, Milwaukee Math and Science Academy Art student participated in the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Annual Poster to Billboard Contest for grades k – 8. “Poster-to-Billboard Contest: Established in 1999, this contest is another way to get the fire safety message out. City of Milwaukee Public and Private School students create posters on their interpretation of a given topic. The winning poster is made into a billboard to be displayed during the month of October. Grand Prize Winners are selected by the Milwaukee Bucks and receive sky box tickets to a selected Bucks game in October. This contest starts in September and winners are selected by the first week of October (Fire Prevention Week).” – (Official website of the City of Milwaukee)
Milwaukee Math and Science Academy student, Izabella Cervantes (1A), was selected by the Milwaukee Fire Department & the Milwaukee Bucks Basketball Team as the third place winner for her fire safety poster design. On Thursday, October 9, 2014, Izabella was invited to attend the Poster to Billboard Contest Winners Lunch with the Fire Chief from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM at the MFD Headquarters Engine 2, located at 759 North James Lovell Street, Milwaukee, WI. The fire fighters made homemade pizza for the poster winners and the students participated in a personalized tour of the fire departments as well as having lunch with the Chief.
Additionally, Isabella and her classmates were given free admission to the Milwaukee Bucks basketball game on October 22, 2014. Izabella and her family joined the other poster design winners and the MFD Chief in the Sky box to enjoy catering and the display of their posters on the jumbo screens during this evening’s basketball game. The winners also received their posters made into giant posters as a keepsake. Their designs will be used throughout Milwaukee Public Schools to promote fire safety.
